Plattform Lernende Systeme is broadening the public debate on AI
Plattform Lernende Systeme – Germany’s platform for Artificial Intelligence – is bringing the societal debate on Artificial Intelligence (AI) to a wider audience. The decision to do so was taken by the Steering Committee of the platform – an initiative of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) – on 30 October at its fourth meeting in Berlin. Together with Co-Chairs Federal Minister Anja Karliczek and the President of acatech, Karl-Heinz Streibich, committee members discussed the platform’s future course of action.
The use of Artificial Intelligence presents numerous opportunities but also legal, ethical and security-related challenges. Germany’s researchers, entrepreneurs and politicians must discuss unanswered questions with their fellow members of society. To take part in this dialogue, a basic understanding of AI applications is indispensable. Plattform Lernende Systeme is therefore bringing application scenarios into the public debate at the federal government’s Digital Summit on 3 and 4 December in Nuremberg that show how our lives could look in the near future with support from AI. The platform’s experts will present initial recommendations for how we can deal with the risks as a society without missing out on AI’s potential, and will discuss the opportunities it opens up with representatives from business, political and social spheres.
The agenda of the meeting featured topics such as the federal government’s AI strategy, which is due to be published shortly. As Plattform Lernende Systeme is helping to implement and develop this strategy, the Steering Committee advised on its content and proposed ways in which it could be structured further.
This was the first committee meeting to be attended by Bernd Leukert, a member of SAP’s management board. He has replaced Tanja Rückert, who after moving to Bosch now serves on the Steering Committee as the Group’s representative.
As the leadership of Plattform Lernende Systeme, the Steering Committee shapes the platform’s focus and makes decisions on its content and strategy. The committee members acting for business and science have been appointed by BMBF to represent important issues, disciplines, sectors and companies of different sizes in the field of self-learning systems.
